Nsawam Prison: 12 inmates on remand discharged as part of Justice for All programme

The Justice for All programme has discharged 12 prisoners who were on remand at the Nsawam Medium Security Prison.

They reclaimed their liberty after an ad hoc court at the prison set them free on Wednesday, July 24, 2024.

One other inmate was acquitted and discharged by the ad hoc court, with ten others granted bail.

Meanwhile, two others were denied bail. Most of the prisoners had been detained at the penitentiary for various offences including murder and unnatural carnal knowledge, spending years at the facility without trial.

Justice Afia Serwah Asare-Botwe, a Court of Appeal judge with additional responsibility as a high court judge, addressing the media after the hearing, lauded the Justice for All programme whilst urging investigators to employ diligence in their service to ensure people do not locked up in jail without trial.

Almost prisons in the country have been congested, with the Community Service Bill being pushed to be passed into law to decongest the facilities. This will also help improve the deplorable conditions at the prisons.

Jonathan Osei Owusu, Executive Director of Perfector of Sentiment, addressing reporters at the entrance of the Nsawam Medium Security Prison, reemphasised how the bill, if passed into law, will help improve the conditions at the prisons and also reduce the high expenditure borne by the state at the prisons.
